WHY I WRITE

I write because I really want and hope to help others find a transformative path out of desperate situations that I’ve faced myself.

In my second book, Mostly Sober: A Love Story and a Road Trip, my protagonist, Annie, breaks free of a daily drinking habit. She didn’t require AA or an inpatient recovery program; she just needed to cut back on a hurtful habit that prevented her from achieving life-time goals.

Besides the family saga, Annie’s struggle to change, and the love story, Mostly Sober includes a Resources Section for those looking for tools to live a happier and healthier life with less alcohol. Here is the introduction to the Resources Section.

Thank you for joining me and Annie on our journeys to alcohol minimization. It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it. I hope Annie’s struggles, failures, and eventual triumphs will help you see your way to drink less, if that is your intention.

You want to have a healthy body and mind. We all deserve that, but we must be responsible for our part in those life-affirming goals.

I’ve fallen away from my determination to minimize my habit. But I’ve gotten back up and tried again. Changing an ingrained habit may entail backslides. Accept them, dust yourself off, and get back on track. You will still be moving ahead.

I was a daily drinker for years. Daily but not heavy. Still, I knew I needed to cut back. I’ve gotten a lot of help from podcasts, apps, and communities.

Here are two of my favorite podcasts: It’s Not About the Alcohol with Colleen Kachmann and The Alcohol Minimalist with Molly Watts

I don’t intend to give up drinking. I enjoy a glass or two of wine or champagne on special occasions. The definition of special occasions is entirely up to you: Finally donated those Goodwill bags? Fertilized the house plants? Organized those tax-deductible receipts? You’ve got to decide. Just be careful of “It was such a lousy day….” Or “I need to relax….” Those can be slippery slopes.

The everyday drinking thing is no longer happening. I like it that way. You might too. Here’s Annie’s story.
